2025 NY Certified Potato Growers, Varieties and Acreages
The information listed here and published in the NY State Certified Seed Potato Crop Directory are based on summer field inspections. Certification and classification of acreages may change after the Winter Test (lab testing by Maine Potato Disease Testing Lab) and the final version of the data will be published here.
Potato variety descriptions
Adirondack Blue. Early to mid-season specialty table-stock. Tubers have dark purple skin and purple flesh and are high in antioxidants. Susceptible to pink rot, common scab, Fusarium, and silver scurf. Resistant to golden nematode. Cornell University.
Adirondack Red. Early to mid-season specialty table-stock. Tubers are long with reddish-purple skin and pink flesh. Moderate resistance to common scab and hollow heart. Susceptible to silver scurf, pink rot, Fusarium, golden nematode. Scab reaction similar to Atlantic. Cornell University.
AmaRosa. Mid-season fingerling potato with red skin and red flesh. Tubers are smooth with well distributed, shallow eyes. Very high culinary quality; ideal for microwaving, frying or baking. Retains color when chipped. Can skin during harvest. Brown center and hollow heart are rare. Medium storage capability and medium to high fertility requirements. Susceptible to Metribuzin. Atlantic. Mid-season, table or processor. Tubers smooth, oval to round with light to heavy-netted skin. Very high specific gravity. Resistant to PVX, net necrosis and tolerant to scab, Verticillium wilt, golden nematode, pink eye. Susceptible to hollow heart and internal necrosis.
Austrian Crescent. Late season, specialty table-stock. Long, crescent-shaped fingerling tubers with smooth, tan skin and light yellow flesh. Moderate resistance to scab, PVY.
Baltic Rose. Mid-season, red skin, yellow flesh specialty table-stock from Germany. High yield, medium resistance to late blight, scab, PVY, rhizoctonia, black leg and golden nematodes. Tall growth habit with red-violet flowers. PVP Certificate #202100266.
Bannock Russet. Late season, oblong russet with processing and fresh market qualities, and great disease resistance. Released in 1999 by the USDA-ARS and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Similar to Russet Burbank with higher yields with reduced nitrogen. Med-large, upright, semi-closed canopy and medium, star shaped white flowers. Resistant to PVY, Verticillium wilt, common scab, leafroll net necrosis; moderate resistance to early blight and soft rot and defects; susceptible to late blight (tuber, foliar), potato leafroll, PVX, Fusarium dry rot.
Belmonda. Early maturing with yellow flesh and skin, and good drought tolerance. Great resistance to rhizoctonia, blackleg, and late blight, and moderate resistance to scab. Excellent storage. Tall growth habit with red-violet flowers. Developed in Germany. PVP Certificate #201600073.
Blackberry. Very deep purple flesh and skin. Mid-season crop with uniform round tubers developed by MSU and Great Lakes Potato Chip Co. Good common scab resistance, low incidence of internal defects, high yielding with irrigation, great for chipping and specialty markets. Full-sized, semi-erect vine. PVP Certificate #202000352.
Bliss (NY163). Mid-late season chip-stock with exceptionally light chip color out of cold storage. Trials in NY have shown great yields, low frequency of internal defects, reasonable resistance to common scab, resistant to race Ro1 of the golden nematode. Blistering of chips has been sometimes observed in commercial production. Developed by Cornell Potato Breeding Program (CPBP).
Caribou Russet (AF3362-1). Mid-season, russeted-skin, white flesh mashing potato adapted to the North. Moderate resistance to scab, verticillium wilt, low incidence of hollow heart. Good yielding oval-to-oblong tubers. Developed by the Univ of Maine. PVP Certificate #201600025
Clearwater Russet. Similar to Russet Burbank with oblong tuber shapes, shallow eyes, medium-heavy russet skin, firm, white to creamy white flesh. High yield average and high specific gravity. The plants are upright, medium-sized with white-tipped purple-red flowers and moderate berry production. Resistant to PVX, late blight, sugar ends, and most defects; moderate resistance to Verticillium wilt, common scab, PVY; susceptible to Fusarium dry rot, and bacterial ring rot, early blight, potato leaf roll, and hollow heart. Columba. Early season yellow skin and yellow flesh, large, round oval tuber with great yield and good resistance to common scab, golden nematode, and potato wart. Creamy textured, this potato is good for roasting, boiling and mashing. Adapted to a variety of growing conditions and its early skin set allows for early harvest. Released by HZPC.
Constance. Medium-early growing season, yellow-skinned, pale yellow-fleshed table variety, with oval round tubers. Resistant to secondary growth, black spot and growth cracks, good resistance to PVY, late blight (foliage), common scab and fusarium dry rot. Semi-upright growth habit, white flowers. PVP Certificate #201800121.
Fenway Red. Mid-season, high-yielding, red skin, white flesh all-purpose round tuber. Stores well and keeps the red skin throughout the storage period. High resistance to tuber blight, tobacco rattle virus and little potato disorder, powdery scab, and PVY symptoms, and medium resistance to common scab. Developed by HZPC/Holland. PVP #201400299.
Genesee (NY78). Late maturing table-stock. Yield and specific gravity similar to Monona. Tubers round, white, bright skin, white flesh. Resistant to golden nematode, Verticillium, early blight and scab. Developed by CPBP.
Juliette. Early table-stock. Good yield of long oval, yellow skinned and fleshed tubers. Resistance to common scab and golden nematode. PVP #200100104, GERMICOPA SAS.
Keuka Gold (NY101). Mid-late season table-stock, possibly chip-stock from 50° storage. Pale yellow flesh, scurfy skin. Very high yields of large round tubers, very few pickouts. Small percentage of internal defects upstate, but internal necrosis on Long Island. Scab resistance like Superior. Specific gravity like Katahdin. Resistant to golden nematode. Developed by CPBP.
Lady Liberty (NY152). Late season chip-stock producing smaller round-shaped tubers with netted skin. Excellent chip color from cold storage. Moderate to good resistance to common scab. Developed by CPBP. PVP Certificate #201800302.
Lamoka (NY139). Late maturity chip-stock. Large tubers with attractive shape and moderately textured skin. Yields similar to Atlantic. Specific gravity has averaged 0.01 less than Atlantic. Tuber dormancy is one week longer than Atlantic. Good chip color from 44F storage. Moderate resistance to common scab. Resistant to golden nematode (Ro1). Developed by CPBP. LaRatte. Late maturing small to medium, fingerling with yellow skin and smooth, nutty, buttery yellow flesh popular with chefs and fresh markets. Prolific fruit set but lower yielding. Medium-sized plants with white flowers.
Lehigh (NY126). Mid-late season table-stock. Large tubers with scurfy skin and appealing yellow flesh. Good yields with few pickouts and low levels of internal defects. Good boiling quality. Attractive vines with white flowers. Scab resistance is similar to Pike. Resistant to golden nematode (Ro1). Developed by CPBP.
Mackinaw. Developed by Michigan State University, this mid- to late-season chipping potato is resistant to PVY and late blight and is tolerant to common scab. High percentage of uniform shape A-size tubers. Great long-term storage and low occurrence of internal defects
Natascha. Early-season, high yielding, long oval tubers with very yellow skin and flesh. Cooking-type potato with excellent taste. Very resistant to rhizoctonia, black leg, tuber rots, PVY, and bruising. Medium resistance to leaf blight, scab and internal rust spot. Semi-upright plant with white flowers. PVP #201100360
NY118. Late season table-stock. Tubers have smooth light red skin. Yield, set, and size is similar to Chieftain. Dormancy and scab resistance better than Chieftain. Resistance to golden nematode (Ro1). Developed by CPBP.
NY149. Mid-late season yellow-fleshed tablestock derived from a cross between Yukon Gold x Keuka Gold. Slightly-textured skin and pink eyes. Low pickouts, mostly misshapes. Low level of hollow heart, specific gravity slightly less than Atlantic. Resistant to race Ro1 of golden nematode, moderate resistance to common scab. Developed by CPBP.
NY174. High yielding, full season chipstock. Tubers are round to oblong with lightly textured skin. Low pick-outs and internal defects. Intermediate reaction to common scab. Resistant to race Ro1 of the golden nematode. Molecular markers suggest resistance to potato virus Y. Tuber dormancy is about three weeks longer than Atlantic. Specific gravity averaged slightly higher than Snowden. Developed by CPBP.
NY177. Mid-late season chipstock. Tubers are round to oblong with lightly textured skin. Higher specific gravity than Atlantic. Moderate resistance to common scab. Resistant to race Ro1 of the golden nematode. Developed by CPBP.
Purple Majesty. Early season specialty tablestock. Purple skin, purple flesh oval tuber with high yield potential. Medium vine size, semi-erect plant with light blue flowers. Derived from a cross between All Blue and a white potato (ND2008-2). Developed by Colorado State University. PVP #200500233
Reba (NY87). Mid-late season chip and table-stock. High yields with specific gravity slightly greater than Monona. Tubers early sizing, large, white skin and flesh. Chips well from 45F storage. Tubers larger than Atlantic and the largest tubers may have hollow heart so closer spacing is helpful for encouraging small-to-medium sizes. Resistant to golden nematode and intermediate resistance to scab. Developed by CPBP.
Red Maria (NY129). Late season, red-skinned table-stock. High yields of large, round tubers with shallow eyes and textured skin with few internal or external defects. Yield, dormancy better than Chieftain. Excellent yields in organic trials. Good boiling and cooking quality. Dark green vines with red/purple flowers. Excellent resistance to common scab, similar to Pike. Resistant to golden nematode (Ro1). Developed by CPBP.
Red Prairie. Early-to-mid season oblong potato with smooth red skin and white flesh. High yielding across diverse conditions. Tolerance to common scab and resistant to hollow heart but slight susceptibility to internal brown spot. Recent release from the Univ of Wisconsin Breeding Program. PVP # 202000152.
Russian Banana. Long-season heirloom fingerling with light yellow, waxy skin and a dense, buttery flesh popular with chefs. Prolific production of small, elongated tubers, decent drought tolerance and good storage life. High resistance to scab.
Sangre. Early to mid season red-skin, white flesh, round to oval, tablestock tuber with good disease resistance. Slow emergence but then rapid growth with shallow roots. Released by Colorado State University in 1982.
Snowden. Late season chipper and table-stock. High yielding, high specific gravity. Chips out of 45°. Tubers round-oval, medium shallow eyes, buff skin, white flesh. Susceptible to scab.
Soraya. Medium early, high yielding table-stock with yellow skin and flesh. Big, oval tubers and shallow eyes. Good resistance against internal bruising. Moderately resistant against leaf roll, leaf blight and tuber blight. Resistance to nematodes Ro1 Ro4. PVP Developed in Germany. Certificate #201100141.
Superior. Early table-stock. Medium yield and specific gravity. Tubers round, medium shallow eyes, buff lightly flaky russet skin, white flesh. Resistant to scab. Susceptible to late blight, PVY, and Verticillium wilt.
Upstate Abundance (NY150). Niche-market, early season white table-stock. Produces many small tubers with bright white skin. Resistant to race Ro1 of the golden nematode. Some resistance to common scab and late blight. Developed by CPBP. PVP Certificate #201700299.
Waneta (NY138). Late maturity, high yielding chip-stock. Large tubers with attractive shape and moderately textured skin. In Cornell trials, yield has been comparable to Atlantic, gravity averaged 0.01 < Atlantic. 5-10% hollow heart. Very good chip color from 44 degree storage. Dormancy six weeks longer than Atlantic. Moderately resistant to common scab. Less susceptible to blackspot than Snowden. Resistant to the golden nematode (Ro1). Developed by Cornell Potato Breeding Program. PVP Certificate #200900363.
